Things You Need To Know About Types Of Dentures

If you are suffering from tooth loss, you may be in the process of exploring your restoration options.

If Dentures are on your research list, you’ve come to the right place. But first, what are dentures?

Dentures are an appliance that replaces missing teeth and surrounding tissues. But did you know, not all dentures are the same? There are multiple types of dentures.

Continue reading to learn about denture types and find out which one is best for you.

9 Types of Dentures:

  1. Traditional/Conventional Complete full Dentures
  2. Partial Dentures
  3. Custom Dentures
  4. Immediate Dentures
  5. Implant Supported Dentures
  6. Snap-in dentures
  7. Overdentures
  8. Upper Dentures
  9. Economy Dentures

1. Traditional Complete Full Dentures

If you are missing all of your teeth, your dentist will likely recommend complete dentures. Complete dentures rest on the top of your gums and are removable. They are entirely customizable and mimic a healthy, beautiful smile. Your dentist will typically place complete dentures within 8 to 12 weeks after a dental extraction procedure.

2. Partial Dentures

If some of your natural teeth still remain in your upper or lower jaw, your dentist may suggest partial dentures. Partial Dentures consist of a pink or gum-colored plastic base that is attached to a metal piece. This metal-framework holds the denture securely in place.

Partial dentures are removable and prevent remaining teeth from shifting or changing position. This convenient device is made from all-acrylic or acrylic material.

3. Custom Dentures

Custom dentures can create a more natural-looking and attractive smile. This type of denture is custom designed and consists of as many replacement teeth required to fill in the gaps left by missing teeth. These dentures are extremely functional and restore chewing abilities. They also prevent teeth from drifting out of position.

4. Immediate Dentures

This type of denture is placed into your mouth immediately after the teeth are extracted. As the name suggests, immediate dentures allow you to speak and eat without having to wait.

5. Implant Supported Dentures

A dental implant is used to support this type of denture. Your dentist may recommend this option to you if you are missing all of your teeth, but have adequate bone in the jaw to support the implants. Implant supported dentures provide outstanding stability while speaking and eating. This type of denture is also natural-looking and long-lasting.

6. Snap-in Dentures

If you are missing your entire set of teeth, but still have adequate bone to support an implant, you may qualify for snap-in dentures. Snap-in dentures are the most stable type of dentures, and can also be removed for cleaning and care.

7. Overdentures

An overdenture rests on top of your remaining natural teeth or attaches to a dental implant. This removable device can be placed on the upper and/or lower jaw.

8. Upper Dentures

The upper denture replaces upper missing teeth, hence the name. Upper dentures receive extra support from the large surface area of the palate (roof of your mouth).

9. Economy Dentures

This is another type of denture that unsurprisingly is considered the most affordable. Economy dentures are generic and lack security and comfort. They are also less aesthetically pleasing and will require the patient to use denture adhesives for a more secure fit.
