7 Different Types Of Dentures You Should Know

Dentures are prosthetic implants used by people who have lost some or all of their teeth.

Dentures are prosthetic implants used by people who have lost some or all of their teeth. They look and function just like natural teeth and are designed to fill in the gaps created by lost teeth. Also known as 'false teeth'- the dentures are typically made of acrylic and restore the missing function along with the aesthetics of your teeth.

Classification of dentures

All dentures can be broadly classified as removable and fixed dentures. The main difference between the two is that removable dentures can be popped in and removed anytime, but fixed dentures can only be removed by a dentist.

Removable Dentures

The removable dentures are designed for people who have lost one or more teeth surrounded by healthy natural teeth, which now have a gap. They fit over the jawbone and can be taken out whenever you want, making them convenient. These dentures last about five years before they need to be replaced.

Fixed dentures

Also known as full dentures or non-removable dentures, fixed dentures are a series of prosthetic teeth installed with dental implants over the jawbone to anchor a full arch of replacement teeth firmly. Compared to removable dentures, permanent dentures are more durable and can last a lifetime. However, they are more expensive too.

What are the different types of dentures?

Some different types of dentures are discussed below:

Traditional dentures

Traditional dentures are most suitable for patients who are missing all of their teeth. Unlike immediate dentures, these dentures are placed about eight to 12 weeks after teeth removal. In addition, they are not attached to the jaw bone, so sometimes they can shift while talking or eating and become problematic.

Implant-supported Dentures

This kind of denture uses a dental implant to eliminate the limitations of traditional dentures. These implant-supported dentures are anchored by dental implants (tiny titanium screws) inserted into the jawbone rather than just sitting on the gums. These are best for patients who need added retention due to bone loss.

Snap-in Denture

Snap-in dentures are usually used for patients with no teeth but still have enough bone to support an implant. These dentures have locator attachments embedded within their tissue side that can be snapped onto dental implants. These dentures are removable, very stable and do not move.

Overdentures

Overdentures are great for patients who want comfort and an increased level of function. These removable dentures sit on top of the gums (upper jaw) and are held in place with dental implants to help the patient feel like they have a full set of teeth naturally.

Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures are for those patients who want their teeth removed and dentures installed on the same day. These removable full-arch dentures are made in advance and positioned immediately after the teeth extraction.

Cantilever Dental Bridge

A cantilever dental bridge is recommended for patients who have a tooth on only one side of the missing tooth. It can effectively eradicate the gap that is formed along the gumline. Depending on the number of abutments and types of retainers, these dentures can be of different types.

Custom Dentures

Custom dentures are removable replacement teeth designed to fit your mouth comfortably. They replicate natural teeth and are made to your exact specifications. They can be either a full set of dentures or a partial set of dentures.
