Chevrolet's New Chapter for Driver Assurance

It’s only natural that most of us worry about our health, especially as we get older and bits tend to start wearing

It’s only natural that most of us worry about our health, especially as we get older and bits tend to start wearing out. It would therefore be great for us all if we had something that continually monitored the performance of our vital organs, and sent messages to our smartphones when they weren’t functioning as well as they should do anymore. Although there’s no such available system for us just yet, there soon will be for our vehicles; at least there will be if you have a Chevrolet, anyway.

That’s because the U.S. automaker is introducing a new prognostic service that will initially monitor the status of your vehicle’s battery, starter motor and fuel pump, which are all critical to starting and keeping it up and running. But this is only the start, as more vital systems and components will be added to the monitoring list in later model years.

This revolutionary and industry-leading prognostic technology will be able to predict and notify drivers when certain components need attention, which will often be before a vehicle’s performance is impacted. The system will utilize OnStar 4G LTE to provide data streams from sensors within the vehicle, that will notify the vehicle owner via email, text message, in-vehicle alerts or even through the OnStar RemoteLink smartphone app.

Alicia Boler-Davis, who is the General Motors senior vice president of Global Connected Customer Experience, explained, “This is a new chapter in our pursuit to provide customers with convenience and the best overall service in the industry. Using our innovative OnStar 4G LTE connectivity platform, we can actively monitor vehicle component health and notify our customers if covered vehicle components need attention. Nobody else in the industry is offering this.”

The announcement of the implementation of this new feature in selected 2016 Equinox, Tahoe, Suburban, Corvette, Silverado and Silverado HD models is a real coup for Chevy, as we often see this sort of cutting-edge technology appearing in luxury European and Japanese brands first.

This prognostic capability is just the latest advancement in a range of services and features, which are designed to keep buyers informed of just how their vehicle is performing from the day they take delivery through to the day they trade it in. Chevy owners with an active OnStar connection can already monitor things such as tire pressure, oil life and other key data points via the RemoteLink smartphone app, or if they prefer, through a monthly diagnostic email sent to them from the vehicle.

Not only will these advancements help owners to avoid potential safety issues, they will also help to extend the life of their vehicles by dealing will issues before they start to cause further, more serious problems down the line if left unresolved. If only they could do the same for humans!
