The Different Types of Compressors

Compressors are devices which are used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems. The main purpose of a compressor is to regulate the flow of the refrigerant in the circuit of the device by drawing in the refrigerant at a low pressure and temperature and delivering it at a higher temperature and pressure.

Compressors are devices which are used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems. The main purpose of a compressor is to regulate the flow of the refrigerant in the circuit of the device by drawing in the refrigerant at a low pressure and temperature and delivering it at a higher temperature and pressure. There are many different types of compressors available on the market, each with their own benefits and uses. This article takes a look at some of the most common types of compressors, and it also explains where you can purchase them from.

Compressors can be categorized into two main types: reciprocating compressors and rotary compressors. Reciprocating compressors can include hermetic and semi-hermetic compressors, and open-type compressors which are made for systems that require higher capacity usages. Rotary compressors include scroll, vane, screw and centrifugal compressors.

Reciprocating Compressors

The pistons inside this type of compressor are designed in a similar way to those compressors which are found in car engines. They are made to be positioned inside of a cylinder from which they can draw in and compress the refrigerant.

Hermetic compressors are enclosed in a casing. These types of compressors are commonly used in household refrigerators and in household air conditioning systems.

Semi-hermetic compressors are made so that the drive motor and compressor are fitted inside of a protective casing to prevent dust and air from entering the compressor. The difference between these and hermetic compressors is that they can be opened for routine maintenance and inspection.

Open-type compressors are a type of compressor that features a crankshaft which is positioned outside of the crankcase.

Rotary Compressors

Rotary compressors are any type of compressor that uses impellers, involute screws or scrolls.

Scroll compressors feature one stationary scroll and another scroll which is designed to orbit around the first scroll. This motion is what causes the gas to reach a very high pressure, and once it does this the gas is discharged through a hole in the centre of the compressor.

Stationary or rotary vane compressors use vanes which are located inside of the compressor. The vanes are responsible for moving the gas refrigerant in order to increase its pressure and temperature.

Screw compressors use two screws that are coupled together. The progressive overlapping of these screws causes a reaction and a reduction in the volume of the gas.

Centrifugal compressors feature a high speed rotor which is housed inside a special chamber. When the rotor rotates it imparts kinetic energy onto the gas and forces it through the opening in the compressor.

Where to Purchase Compressors From

The best place to purchase compressors is from a specialist online retailer. Not only will they have the best selection of products, but they will also have knowledgeable staff who will be able to answer any questions you may have and help you to make the right choice All major companies will have a website where you can view more detailed information on the types of compressors that they sell along with their contact details and information on how to order.
