There are many reasons people might undergo drug and alcohol testing, whether for legal, professional, or personal purposes. Professional alcohol testing is becoming an increasingly famous & accessible choice for private use, workplace safety, etc. Now more testing methods are available than ever, making it straightforward to choose one that best fulfills the purpose. One of the most widely-used alcohol tests is nail alcohol testing.

What is Alcohol Nail Test?

Alcohol undergoes four different processes in the body: metabolism, distribution, absorption, and excretion. After metabolization, the resulting products - the alcohol metabolites get trapped in other body parts, like hair, nails, etc. Here comes the role of nail alcohol testing.

An alcohol nail test involves analyzing toenails or fingernails (never a mixture of both) to determine whether alcohol metabolites are present. Nail alcohol testing does not determine the level of alcohol in the body. Instead, it reveals the record of alcohol usage, consumption, frequencies, patterns, etc.

How Does Alcohol Nail Test Work?

Nail tests are non-invasive, an easy, & highly accurate method to test alcohol use for up to 12 months. When a person consumes alcohol, it is processed by the liver, & its metabolite - EtG (ethyl glucuronide), is discharged into the bloodstream. Ethyl glucuronide is a long-term biomarker of ethanol. Fingernails & toenails are comprised of keratin. As the nails grow, alcohol metabolite can pass from the blood vessels below the nails into the keratin fibers, where they become trapped. Nails are 4x thicker than the normal hair strand & often capture more substance than hair can.

Why Do You Choose Nail Alcohol Testing?

Nail samples have been used in pharmacokinetic (study of the effect on the body)analyses. Now, they are also showing their value in the alcohol tests field.

Nail clippings should be as close to the nail bed as possible for alcohol nail tests. If the nail length is 5 mm, a single nail clipping can be adequate for this test. For shorter nails, it is better to take nail clippings of 10 mg (approximately) for a conclusive result. You can use fingernails or toenails, but never a mixture of both.

The advantages of using nail samples for alcohol testing are as follows:

  • Nail analysis can provide exact information about alcohol consumption. It is simple to collect & easy to transport.
  • It is long-lasting & does not spoil quickly.
  • The longer window of detection for up to a 12-month.
  • Hair has a cyclic growth rate with various stages, while nails continuously grow, facilitating detailed interpretations.
