Types of Alcohol Testing

Nail Alcohol Testing

In the liver, ethanol is altered to EtG and reaches the nails via the blood, primarily through the nail bed capillaries. Nail keratin, being 4x times thicker, will often capture and contain alcohol biomarkers for a long period. Therefore, EtG acts as the alcohol biomarker for nail alcohol tests. It is a direct alcohol biomarker because it is produced when Alcohol is metabolized. In contrast to direct alcohol biomarkers such as EtG & EtPa, indirect biomarkers such as carbohydrate-deficient transferrin & aspartate aminotransferase can measure the impact of alcohol consumption on an individual's health.

Hair Alcohol Testing

Hair alcoholism tests can also be the solution for parents & loved ones who doubt their dear ones are addicted to alcohol. The body breaks down Alcohol into two metabolites, i.e., EtG (ethyl glucuronide) & fatty acid thy ester. Ethyl Palmitate, or EtPa, is the basis of the hair alcoholism test. These metabolites are known as alcohol biomarkers and are absorbed into the hair separately. The alcohol biomarkers in the hair symbolize the period of alcohol consumption in a person and serve as the basis for alcohol detection tests.

Sample Collection for Nail and Hair Alcohol Testing

For the nail alcohol testing, clipping of the nail should be required. If the nail length is five millimeters, one nail clipping can be sufficient for the test. When the size of the nail is shorter than 5mm, it is better to take 10 mg of nail clippings for a definitive result. One can use both fingernails/toenails but do not mix them. This test can reveal the history of alcohol consumption in an individual for up to the past twelve months.

For hair alcohol detection tests, 200+ hair strands are required. A minimum 3-5cm section is taken from the head for the EtPa and EtG testing. Depending upon the hair length, this test can trace the extent, frequency & pattern of alcohol consumption in a person for three to six months.
