Arkema Acquires A Stake In Tiamat And Accelerates In Next Generation Batteries

Arkema invests in Tiamat, a CNRS spin-off, advancing sodium-ion battery tech, aiming for lithium-free solutions.

Arkema, a worldwide specialty materials firm, has invested in Tiamat, a start-up focused on sodium-ion battery technology. The investment will help to accelerate the development of technical solutions for sodium-ion batteries, which do not contain lithium. Arkema's strategic move is consistent with the company's ambition to being a significant player in battery materials, delivering a comprehensive range of products appropriate for various energy storage technologies.

Tiamat, a 2017 spin-off from the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), focuses on the design, development, industrialization, and marketing of sodium-ion batteries. This technique offers an alternative to lithium batteries while resolving lithium supply chain restrictions. Tiamat's recent €22 million funding round included key partners such as Stellantis Ventures and MBDA in addition to Arkema.

Tiamat intends to build a 5 GWh Giga-factory in France specialized to the production of sodium-ion battery cells, with money acquired and backing from the French government and the European Union. The first phase, capable of producing 0.7 GWh, might be operational by the end of 2025, potentially providing 1,000 employment.

Armand AJDARI, Chief Technology Officer at Arkema, stressed the importance of Tiamat's sodium-ion technology in lowering reliance on lithium and other important metals. The investment fits Arkema's objective of developing breakthrough materials for a more sustainable world.
