Three Jeeps Make Top 10 Cheapest Vehicles to Insure List

When most people think about autos that they can insure at limited expense, they envision compact sedans and hatchbacks. Many drivers will be surprised to learn that three Jeep vehicles recently appeared on a list of the ten models with the least expensive insurance premiums, compiled by Insure.com.

The Jeep Wrangler Sport came in first. Among new cars available in the United States, it has the lowest insurance costs. This two-door compact SUV features off-road capabilities and four-wheel drive. The base Sport edition comes with six stereo speakers, a folding windshield and a soft top that drivers can remove. This vehicle's doors are also detachable.

The Sport has a six-cylinder engine that generates 285 horsepower. Its manual transmission features six speeds. This auto travels up to 21 miles per gallon and costs less than $23,000. Heated leather seats, high-end electronics and an automatic gearbox are available. Jeep introduced several additional colors for the Wrangler in 2014, including copperhead, amp'd and anvil.

The Jeep Patriot came in second on the list of inexpensive autos to insure. It outranked every new vehicle from other brands. This model is another relatively small SUV. Its fuel economy can reach numbers as high as 30 mpg on the highway. The Patriot also recently won an award from Kelley Blue Book for its low ownership costs. This auto is available with two- or four-wheel drive.

Patriot buyers can choose between a manual five-speed gearbox and an automatic unit with six speeds. The vehicle features anti-lock brakes, plentiful cargo room and a powerful 2.4-liter engine. Drivers may add many luxurious options, including a leather steering wheel, air conditioning, heated seats and a DVD/CD player. The Patriot Sport starts at under $17,000.

A front-wheel-drive version of the Jeep Compass Sport also appeared on the list. It ranked as the sixth least-costly model to insure. This relatively inexpensive crossover resembles the Patriot in several ways. It comes with the same five-speed transmission. However, the Compass Sport has a two-liter, four-cylinder engine. This model includes a handy flashlight that drivers can recharge inside of the vehicle.

The base Compass Sport offers several high-end features. It has fog lights, cruise control, air conditioning, lighted cup holders and a digital thermometer. In 2014, Jeep updated the crossover's styling and introduced rear-view cameras as an option. Buyers also gained the ability to choose a six-speed gearbox with automatic shifting. The Sport drives 23 to 30 mpg and costs under $19,000.

Why do these three Jeep models rank among the least expensive autos to insure? The Insurance Information Institute explains that car prices, theft risks, safety ratings, engine types and maintenance costs affect premiums. Jeep's Compass, Patriot and Wrangler Sport all benefit from comparatively low prices. Furthermore, front- and four-wheel drive reduce the risk of accidents by boosting traction on slippery surfaces.
