Pavement Markings: What You Should Know

There are many pavement markings you'll see on the road, here are a few basic ones and what they mean.

Have you ever been driving on the highway and noticed a series of black and yellow lines running down the center of the road? Or wondered why some roads have white dashed lines on the side? Pavement markings, also known as road paint, help guide us on our travels. Let’s take a look at what different pavement markings mean and how they guide our day-to-day travel.

Solid White Lines

You will see solid white lines used in many different ways. Generally, these lines separate traffic flowing in opposite directions, like a double yellow line or a single white line running down the center of the highway. These solid white lines also mark passing lanes; when you see one continuous line, it means you can pass over if there is enough space to do so safely. If there are two solid white lines with no gaps between them—that means no passing! This type of pavement marking is also used to indicate where parking is allowed or prohibited.

Broken White Lines

Broken white lines work similarly to solid white lines in dividing traffic in opposite directions. However, sometimes broken white lines are used to indicate that passing is allowed if it can be done safely. If the lines are hard to see or read, you'll want to ensure they're repainted by a quality company such as Pavement Surface Coatings. It's important to remember, though—even if you think it's safe for you to pass over a broken line, always keep an eye out for oncoming traffic from around blind corners or hills before making any decisions about passing.

Double Yellow Lines

One of the most commonly seen pavement markings is double yellow lines—one yellow line painted next to another without any breaks in between them. Double yellow lines are always accompanied by arrows pointing away from each other; this indicates that drivers should not cross over into opposing lanes of traffic unless necessary (like for an emergency). When approaching double yellow lines, always keep your focus on your own lane and never drift across them accidentally.

Double Red Lines

Double red lines indicate that passing is not allowed under any circumstances—no exceptions! You may come across double red pavement markings while driving through school zones or construction zones where extra caution must be taken due to pedestrians or other factors at play. These red marks should never be crossed over, even if it looks like there may be enough space on either side for you to do so safely!

Pavement markings play an essential role in helping us get from point A to B safely every day. While understanding what these markings mean isn’t difficult once you know what each symbol signifies, it’s essential for all drivers (and pedestrians!) to understand their purpose and adhere strictly to them whenever possible. By doing so, we can ensure safety for ourselves and others sharing our roads!
