This article takes a look at five fun things that you can do when you are visiting the Margaret River region.

Visit A Brewery

No visit to the Margaret River region is complete without a trip to one of the famous breweries or wineries. The region produces approximately 3% of Australia's total wine market. There are numerous breweries and wineries to choose from. Many will offer day packages which will allow you to view the workings of the winery or brewery, and also sample some of the drinks that they produce. Visit a Cave

There are hundreds of caves located within the Margaret River region, but only six of these are open to members of the public. The most famous of these caves is the Mammoth Cave, which is situated within the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. It is a large cave which is home to fossils that date back over 35,000 years. The best way to view the cave is to take part in a guided tour, or you can explore it by using an audio self guided tour. The other caves in the area are called the Jewel Cave, Lake Cave, Giants Cave, Calgardup Cave and Ngilgi Cave.

The Lighthouse

The Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is located 8 km west of Augusta. It is a beautiful attraction that can be visited all year round. You can choose to take a guided tour of the lighthouse to learn about its rich history. There is also a visitor centre, a shop and a cafe located onsite.

Whale Watching

If you are lucky enough to visit the Margaret River region at the right time then you may be able to spot some whales. During the months of June to September many whales will feed and breed in Flinders Bay, which is in Augusta. While from September to December you may also be able to view whales in Geographe Bay. The two types of whales that flock here are the humpback whale and the southern right whale. You can choose to get up close with the whales by taking a special guided boat tour, or you can view the whales at special vantage points.

Shopping

Shopaholics are spoilt for choice in the Margaret River region. There are a huge range of shops located in the area, from independent boutiques to famous high street stores. There are also a number of markets held on a regular basis where you can pick up souvenirs, jewelry, books, gifts, artisan foods and clothing.
