Spooky Sites From Around The World

Visiting the spookiest corners of the planet? Consider investing in annual travel insurance to protect yourself.

For those looking for a slightly different holiday adventure, the opportunity to visit some of the world’s scariest landmarks may prove irresistible. On this journey, you’ll see everything from a ferocious fiery pit to an eerie cliff of hanging coffins. Such an expedition will have you challenging Dante’s Inferno and will open your eyes to a very different view of our earth’s majestic viciousness.

Before you venture abroad, make sure you’re prepared as these locations are situated in some of the most remote corners of the world. It is worth purchasing annual travel insurance to protect both your property and your body whilst you’re away.

The Door to Hell, Turkmenistan

At a glance, this crater in the Turkmenistan desert looks as if a giant comet has recently crashed. Yet there is no sign of residual space debris to be found here. In fact, the foreboding fiery pit isn’t a force of nature at all. Instead, during Turkmenistan’s Soviet period, a failed oil exploration resulted in scientists setting this natural methane depository on fire. Although they expected this blaze of fury to last just a few months, it has instead continued to burn for well over forty years. If you’re brave enough to confront the pungent flames, then the view is simply other-worldly.

Hanging Coffins of Sagada, Philippines

The western tradition of burying the dead underground is completely alien to the local people in this corner of the Philippines. Instead, corpses in coffins are hoisted halfway up a number of cliffs. To foreign visitors, such a site might seem very eerie but this is an ancient tradition that holds much historical and spiritual significance to the people of the area.

The Island of the Dolls, Mexico

This one is the creepiest of the bunch. In a prominent corner of this island, there is a collection of decrepit toy dolls that hang from the branches of trees around a canal. Walking around this area in the evening whilst the sun goes down is enough to give even the bravest soul the chills. The story gets worse, however, when you find out that these dolls have been placed there by a local who sees the toys as a spiritual offering to a dead girl whose body was found in that very same canal. See if you can spend the night here – most certainly couldn’t!

Capuchin Catacombs, Italy

When you think of Italy, you might imagine beautiful seaside towns, ornate country villas or stunning Catholic churches. However, this particular attraction in Sicily comes in direct contrast to the bel paese most of us know and love. After the local cemetery became overfilled, the catacombs opened to provide a final resting place for the area’s rich and famous. In total, 8,000 corpses are kept in the space, with many resting in their finest clothes. The sixteenth-century Italians organised the space with incredible detail; children, adults and even virgins have their own corridors. Get ready for a truly morbid experience in this corner of Palermo, Sicily.

There you have it – a small selection of some of the more unusual locations that the earth has to offer. If you haven’t been put off by now, visit these places to gain some seriously interesting anecdotes for the dinner table back home. Just make sure you invest in an annual travel insurance policy that covers all eventualities first to ensure the only scares you get are from these spooky sites.
