The Artist and the Chicken – Which Came First?

Combe House Hotel, near Exeter in Devon, will be hosting a variety of seasonal lunches and events throughout October to mark the month-long West Country Celebration of Food. Devon Hotel of the Year 2010, this stunning, privately-run Grade I Elizabethan manor hotel, restaurant and kitchen gardens is hidden on a 3,500 acre country estate at Gittisham where Arabian horses and pheasants roam freely.

On Sunday, 2nd October between 11am and 1pm, you are invited to meet renowned artist Richard Adams at a private viewing of his latest works in Combe’s historic Georgian Kitchen. His exhibition, Home to Roost, captures the very essence of Combe’s most recent project – the introduction of Indian Game chickens into the ancient Putt apple orchard. Just come along and enjoy a glass of bubbly, the viewing is free and there’s no need to book.

Reserve a table in advance and stay on for Sunday lunch, roast Indian Game chicken will be on the menu with seasonal vegetables grown in Combe’s own restored Victorian kitchen gardens – think food metres not miles! And afterwards you can take a leisurely amble through the gardens and grounds to see the produce growing and the chickens in their orchard.  Three courses with canapés to start are just £36 per person.

Indian Game chicken will feature on the hotel’s lunch menu every Sunday during October; “We only have a limited number for the Celebration of Food month so don’t miss this rare opportunity to enjoy their special flavour”, says Ruth Hunt who runs Combe House with her husband Ken.

Throughout the month Combe’s two Master Chefs of Great Britain, Hadleigh Barrett and Stuart Brown, have created a seasonal Celebration of Food luncheon menu, which is on offer from Monday to Saturday. Two courses with canapés are priced at £28 per person and three at £33, while Sunday lunch is £36. There will also be a special evening menu for romantic dining by candlelight at £49.
