Air travel has become so popular because of its speed and convenience. Instead of taking days, or weeks, to get to a destination, air travel has made it possible for passengers to reach their destination in a single day - even if it is thousands of kilometres away.

Despite this amazing convenience, there is still one massive bottleneck in the air travel system – the airport. Because of the land needed, airports are usually located on the outskirts of a city and can often prove difficult, expensive and inconvenient to get to.

A whole industry has been built up around getting people to and from airports. These various transport options each have their own unique pros and cons, which will be outlined below, in order to help you make the best choice.

Trains and Buses

The most common public transport options available to get you to the airport, are trains and buses. While these are generally the cheapest options, they can be unreliable and you are tied into the timetable of services. Public transport services often don't start very early in the day, or continue late into the night, making these only suitable for a narrow range of departure times.

Airport Shuttles

An airport shuttle is a more refined way of getting to the airport on time for your flights departure. These services are generally run using small mini-vans, or buses. You pay to be picked up from your home and are then brought to the airport. How much you pay for this service will depend on how far away you are from the airport. However, despite being cheaper than a taxi, shuttles are still more expensive than public transport.

The major downside with shuttles is that they still run on a timetable, albeit a more flexible one and you may spend a long time just picking up other passengers, before you even start your journey to the airport.

Taxis

Taxis, as you may already be aware, are by far the most expensive option for getting to the airport. On top of the often obscene rates charged for taxis in Australia, most major airports also charge a levy on top of all cab fares, increasing this cost even further. These should really be your last option for airport transport.

Just Drive!

None of the above options are perfect, so why not just drive your own car? Many people discount this option due to the high cost of airport parking, however, this is avoidable. There are many independent companies which are located close to the airport, that offer very affordable options for parking. You can park your vehicle there and they will drop you off at the terminal.

This allows you the flexibility of using your own vehicle to get to the airport and to leave it easily upon your return.

What Are You Waiting For?

Next time you need to go to the airport, seriously consider driving yourself. Even with the cost of parking your vehicle with a secure parking company, you will very likely come out ahead in cost and convenience.
