Scientists Manipulate Stem Cell Growth and Achieve Faster Regeneration

Stem cells, although not widely used, can be used to regenerate our dead cells when all hope has been lost. Now, in a breakthrough, researchers from the Stanford University School of Medicine have come up with a way to trick stem cells into regenerating at a much-faster rate – potentially paving the way for future medical advances. Their study - titled “Mapping the Pairwise Choices Leading from Pluripotency to Human Bone, Heart, and Other Mesoderm Cell Types” – finds the quickest & most-efficient way to manage individual stem-cell decisions as embryo segmentation occurs.

"The ability to generate pure populations of these cell types is very important for any kind of clinically important regenerative medicine, as well as to develop a basic road map of human embryonic development,” said Kyle Loh, lead research & Stanford student, “Previously, making these cell types took weeks to months, primarily because it wasn't possible to accurately control cell fate. As a result, researchers would end up with a hodgepodge of cell types.”

"The segmentation of the embryo is a fundamental step in human development. Now we can see that, evolutionarily, it's a very conserved process,” he adds.

U.S. Army to Test Spider Silk as Kevlar Replacement

Kraig Biocraft Laboratories, Inc., a biotech company that manufactures artificial spider silk, has been awarded a contract by the U.S. army to develop their Dragon Silk as a potential Kevlar replacement.

“Dragon Silk scores very highly in tensile strength and elasticity, which makes it one of the toughest fibers known to man and the ideal material for many applications.
