Smart eSkin Puts Screen on Your Body

The advent and growth of mobile technology constantly pushes science fiction to the extreme, often leading to science fiction turning into reality. Although companies are trying to build phones that are flexible in nature, researchers in Japan have made something even better.

In the University of Tokyo, researchers have created a device that is thin and flexible, and can be stuck onto the skin to display data using PLED (Polymer Light Emitting Diode) technology. The device is just 3 micrometers thick, and consumes less power with reduced heat emission. The project is ongoing under the guidance of by Professor Takao Someya and Dr. Tomoyuki Yokota.

“What would the world be like if we had displays that could adhere to our bodies and even show our emotions or level of stress or unease,” says Professor Someya. Currently, it is able to display blood oxygen levels in the body by measuring light passing through the body.

From Reusable Rockets to Reusable Spacecraft

Companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin are changing the way we think about space travel in the future by spearheading research into the development of reusable rockets. Offering reduced costs and near-immediate launch schedules, reusable rockets will dominate the future. But, what about a reusable spacecraft?

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has advanced development of its Experimental Spaceplane (XS-1) to Phase 2. Phase 1 started in 2013 with three teams set to build prototypes for the flight contract (Northrop Grumman, Masten Space Systems, and Boeing).

“The objective of the Experimental Spaceplane XS-1 program is to demonstrate the technology needed to fabricate and fly a reusable aircraft to the edge of space. The XS-1 will be capable of deploying a small expendable upper stage to launch a 3,000-pound spacecraft to earth orbit at a cost of $5M, ten times less than today’s launch systems. A key program objective is to fly 10 times in 10 days to demonstrate “aircraft-like” operability, cost efficiency and reliability,” DARPA says.

Powering the United States Using Ocean Water

We are always in need for renewable energy sources. But what about water? The Earth’s oceans cover about 1.4 billion cubic kilometers, most of which is, unfortunately, not harnessed for energy. Now, a company has made a device that has the ability to power one-third of the United States using ocean water alone.

Called Triton and made by Oscilla Power, the device uses ocean waves to generate electricity, as the metal’s magnetic polarity is alternating at all times.
