More and more people are switching to portable solar panels as an alternative to grid electricity. While these are more expensive, these are ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking, camping or trickle charging your RV or boat. If you suffer from a power outage, these panels make for ideal backup. Portable panels usually use 12 Volts. Those who want to opt for portable solar panels should be prepared to invest an added amount. This is required for additional connection so that the panels can be used. Make sure that the connectors fit with the recharging plugs on the devices that you want to use.

You may even purchase some battery clips in case you want to charge your boat or vehicle. To trickle charge the car, place the caravan solar panels in a place with lots of sunshine and plug it within the cigarette lighter socket. You may even attach the clips to the battery of the vehicle to ensure that the batteries are completely charged. As solar portable panels have small size, they will not generate the same amount of energy that is generated by the larger panels. They will not heat the whole house, but the batteries of your cellphone, iPod and GPS can be recharged.

Like the larger solar panels, the portable ones generate energy from the rays of the sun. This is why they should be placed under the open sky under direct sunlight. You must never forget that the solar panels which are purchased have inbuilt regulators, without which you might just overcharge the battery. The regulator automatically adopts the energy output to the amount of energy that is required. Make sure that the panel has a regulator which helps in controlling the amount of energy required in the panel. It prevents the device from over-charging.

The solar panels should not be folded. Although some of them might be foldable, waterproof and durable, these should be handled carefully. Avoid folding the cells or poking them with sharp objects to prevent damage. The portable solar panels can be used to power an electrical object, but while charging the battery, make sure that only the rechargeable batteries are recharged. Recharging the ordinary batteries can damage the panel in the long run. Solar power panels can be carried everywhere, even while camping or during an outing. Make sure that the panel is placed on a safe spot to prevent tripping while you are camping with kids.

The portable solar panels can be attached to a customized connector to provide connection to the caravan solar panels.
