Wedding Photography Through the Ages

A wedding is one of the most important events of a person's life. It is a time that one always looks back to with a sense of joy and nostalgia. One thing that has become almost synonymous with the wedding ceremony itself is the wedding album. Wedding photography gives you a unique and valued set of pictures that help you relive those great moments. No wedding is complete without a wedding photographer, be it an individual or a team.

Wedding photography is a concept that is almost as old as photography itself, and has evolved with it as well. One of the earliest seen wedding pictures is one taken during the wedding of Queen Victoria of England in 1840, a mere 14 years after the invention of photography. However, due to the high costs involved, wedding photography wasn't commonplace for a number of years. It wasn't until the late 19th century that the idea of taking pictures of the bride and groom became more mainstream.

Due to the bulky nature of the pin-hole camera, which was used at the time, and its accessories, wedding photography was still restricted to the studio. The bride and groom would pose in well-lit rooms, wearing either their best clothes or the wedding dress. The photographer would capture a couple of portraits of the bride and groom, and, at times, even the wedding presents, which would later be used in the wedding album, thank-you cards, etc.

The idea of capturing the whole wedding event, rather than just the portrait, became more common after the Second World War due to two major inventions - the film roll and the flash bulb. The size of the camera became considerably smaller, and because of the flash bulb, the need for specialized lighting also became less important. The fact that the photographer was able to move around and click a number of pictures from different angles also gave rise to candid wedding photography. Candid pictures, till then, were not really "candid", but staged after the function to give that impression.

The passage of time and advancements in technology have led to innovations like digital photography, with which the process of taking pictures have become even simpler. When, earlier, the photographer had to process his film in a studio to check how the pictures have come out, now he can check his frames on the go and make any changes he wants to make, at that time itself. Due to cameras becoming cheaper and, simultaneously, more advanced, there have been a great influx of amateurs into the wedding photography scene, which has also made the field extremely competitive.

The importance of wedding photography shows no signs of diminishing in the foreseeable future. Even with the advent of videography, where a video of the entire event is made, it still retains its importance. There is still a special charm reserved to sitting down with your better half, years down the road, and going through pictures of your wedding. As technology evolves, so will wedding photography and who knows what all innovations come in next.
