Top Reasons to Use Solar Power Over Wind Turbines

Using renewable energy sources in your home is a great way to save a lot of money and to update your property bringing it screaming into the modern era. Burning fossil fuels for energy, and relying on big corporations is a simply archaic way to fulfil your energy needs when you consider that there is so much natural energy all around us. If ever a civilized alien race were to visit our planet, they would no doubt find it hilarious that we still rely on such backward methods, and for our own sense of dignity if not the safety of the planet it's paramount we make the switch.

But one thing that isn't so clear is what the best way to start getting that energy is. There  are many different forms of energy available to us and many ways that we can start harnessing that energy from our own home - how do you decide which will result in the most efficiency and the biggest savings?

For most people this will come down to a matter of choosing between solar energy and wind energy, and this is a decision that many people will struggle to make. Here then I'm going to argue in favour of solar power. To find out why, read on.

Efficiency

The first thing to admit is that yes, a wind turbine is generally more efficient than a solar panel and can help you to get more energy and make more surfaces. This is the case on the face of it at least though, and in order to make the most of that efficiency you'll need to have a vertical wind turbine (which takes up more space but can harness the energy regardless of the direction of the wind) and you'll need to be living somewhere relatively windy. To get the full amount of energy that comes advertised when you purchase your wind turbine, there needs to be a consistent wind speed that lasts for a while - it's not good enough to try and harness the odd burst.

And there are ways you can get more energy from your solar panels too. One is of course to have more linked panels and create a large array, while another is to use 'active' solar panels which are attached to motors on the floor and designed to follow the sun through the sky in the same way that plants do with their leaves.

Practicality

When you take these factors into account, your solar panels can be almost as efficient as your wind turbines - and this is good news when you consider the other elements that are going to come into play.

For one, you need to consider the cost of installation and maintenance. Wind turbines cost much more to maintain and are far more likely to go wrong where you can get the cost of solar panels heavily subsidised meaning they're within most budgets.

Combine this with the amount of space that a wind turbine takes up, the fact that it makes a lot of noise and blots out the light to create a 'flicker effect' and the fact that it kills the local birds (not very eco-friendly) and you have a win for solar panels in most situations.
