Did you know Mermaids are Fairies too?

In a previous life, I was a full time Lead Toddler Teacher at a daycare. When you work with small children your love of fairytales amplifies, because of their excitement while they listen to the stories read to them. I know that my class had a soft spot for “Sleeping Beauty”, “Cinderella” and “The Little Mermaid”. When I was thinking about a new and different themed miniature gardens, my mind popped to a friend of mine who worked in my classroom. She easily loves “The Little Mermaid” as much as any toddler. Her birthday is coming up and she already asked me for suggestions on how to use a new container, she received as a gift, to create a special fairy garden. I know that she would love a miniature garden for her apartment balcony. I started wondering, “What if we used that gift to create a fairy garden that is a celebration of water, fish, and (her favorite thing in the world) mermaids?”

The part that I was the most intimidated by was creating an interesting water feature. I noticed there are many water fountains sold in shops or online, but I wanted to create a unique feature. While I was searching online for new ideas I saw that mini gardeners use beach sand, wood, and spray paint to create a three-dimensional lake.  They also used small, glittering, blue beach glass pebbles to represent water in this space. There are fair amounts of options and I wanted a beach scene where I could utilize sand, and large “boulders” for the mermaid to lounge on. When I was online shopping, I stumbled across many fun accessories I could use to dress up her fairy garden. There are mini signs that say “Beach” that would be a fun thing to plop into the sand and give the garden a little more personality. There are also mini boats, fish, and docks that would be an easy way to keep with the theme.

To make the fairy garden scene more authentic we decided to add some seashells and some lounge chairs and a seaside umbrella on the beach. A fairy house designed for the oceanfront garden interested us too. If we want to create some depth in the garden, we could add a mini fence to separate the space between the beach and a possible green space toward the back of the container where we could use some miniature plants to add even more dimension to this miniature garden.

I am aware of how much fun it is to give a completed miniature garden as a gift. However, I plan on surprising my friend with all the supplies and walking her through the steps to create a fairy garden. Working on this small-scale garden with a friend, is a treat. She is one of the most creative people I know - she will easily surprise me with her new ideas and skills.
