Hanging Baskets Transformed into a Fairyland

One of my favorite lazy weekend activities is wandering around greenhouses, hardware stores, and flea markets. If you are looking for fun containers for your miniature gardening projects these are the first places you want to start exploring. Last Sunday I was moseying throughout our local flea market and a few things caught my eye. The first thing I noticed is that there are tons of amusing and unique containers for sale, the second thing I noticed was they are pretty reasonable and cost effective, and the third and final thing I saw was they can inspire new ideas for my next mini garden. I know I was personally drawn to a vintage wheelbarrow that had clearly been used for years and a little beat up, but it just added more character to the potential fairy garden container.

Do I prefer old versus new when it comes to containers? Sometimes I love the idea of buying new containers that you would find at your local greenhouse or hardware store and dressing them up with new miniature accessories of buckets, trolls, fairies, and fairy houses. These fresh and new materials can sometimes be a celebratory purchase or accessories bought for a specific project.

However, sometimes I get inspired by recycled materials, an idea I borrowed from my love of flea markets. I will take an old container lingering behind the woodshed in my backyard, rinse off the dried dirt and cobwebs, and start filling it with fresh potting soil, new beautiful mini plants, and some miniature accessories I have collected from previous projects. When you are the type of person who is creative and you enjoy making things beautiful, it is pleasurable to take old, discarded, reclaimed objects and somehow transform them into something appealing.

Therefore, I decided to pull out an old hanging basket that was stored in our garage and reuse it to make a hanging fairy garden. I was surprised it took me so long to utilize a miniature garden in a hanging basket; it is an innovative idea to add a garden suspended above the ground. I currently live off a lake surrounded by a state park and the inside of my home is decorated with the “beachy” theme in mind. Since I do love distressed objects, reclaimed wood, and shoreline colors I wanted to do something off my front porch that would enhance the lakeside images I use throughout my home. I had a leftover pond, some miniature ducks, and a small boat with a fishing pole along with blue glass pebbles that could signify water. Now my front porch has a vintage fairyland that shows my love for lake living and one of my favorite pastimes suspended from a hanging basket hook.
