Three's a Charm in a Fairy Garden

When I contemplate designing miniature gardens, I like to think about how I can fit particular accessories into different themed fairy gardens. I find one specific mini accessory I like, and then it will spark a connection to a story, a memory, or a theme that I want to build around for my next fairy garden. It is a magical thing to shop online or wander throughout a store and just grab the options that jump out at you. It is like the ultimate window-shopping. For some reason I tend to visualize three of the same items during my shopping experience.

The number three has been meaningful throughout history. It has roots in different religions, cultures, and important historical moments. The number three is particularly significant throughout fairy tales - let us not forget the three little pigs, the three bears, and Rumpelstiltskin's allowing the heroine to guess his name thrice. The theme of three is something that growing up with two older sisters, I thought about frequently. Is there some sort of significance to there being three of us? I have noticed the whimsical number of three is carried on in the stories behind miniscapes too.

My all-time favorite story, that would make a creative miniscape, was the Grimm brother’s interpretations of Cinderella, who needed to go to three different balls in order to give the prince a chance to fall in love with her. She was a mystery and it would be fun to see how the characters could evolve in the creation of a miniature garden. With all great fairy tales, there is an aspect of fairies in the background. The fairy Godmother was in the background, but this special person was a key part of the story. If you want a mini garden that showcases a favorite fairy tale, remember to include those fairies, gnomes, trolls, elves, and pixies within the scene to add a magical touch to your garden.

Remember the importance of themes that involve “the power of three”. It is a classic and constant theme throughout different crafty and creative projects. You could add three fairy houses, three gnome doors, or three mini pots to accessorize your garden and refer to our theme of three. I know that I want something that shows off the relationship that I have with my sisters and captures the three of us, even if we are represented as fairies. It is something I wanted to add to my deck in my backyard and make duplication for my sisters’ homes as well. My passion for miniature gardening usually translates to fun and unique gifts for my loved ones.

So, when you are shopping for your miniature fairy garden, think of purchasing three of the same item. Imagine three pink curly-tailed pigs standing in the field near the barnyard or three birds perched on a white picket fence or three sisters standing together near the garden.  As the saying goes, “Three’s a Charm in the Fairy Garden!”
