How many mothers out there are excited for Mother’s Day? Because the second Sunday in May is a day that is totally dedicated to moms and the fantastic things they do all year, it is a special date for many people. I was thinking about fairy gardening when I went to have a late dinner with a family friend. She is a mother of three, with her youngest daughter being a silly, playful, and energetic six-year-old. It was an exciting moment when I learned her sweet little daughter did well on her spelling test and because of this success, the mom tookher shopping to buy miniature accessories for her fairy garden. It was a fun way to celebrate her accomplishment and an enjoyable activity for a mother and daughter to do together. I could tell as my friend talked about the fairy garden, even she was excited about the accessories they bought together and being able to add those items to their yard.

It occurred to me that mini gardening could be a pleasurable way for a family to celebrate the upcoming Mother's Day and do a creative activity together that could also be a gift for mom. I know I have personally participated in gardening classes on the days leading up to Mother’s Day, so my mom received hanging baskets full of flowers as a gift that I personally planted. Mothers with young children would want something that the little ones created, something personal and memorable, as a gift for Mother's Day that captures their youthful creative energy. I remember being a child and so proud that I made my mom a “paper weight” by painting a rock and wrapping it up in a bow. Of course, my mom still has it; it has been on her dresser for the last fifteen years. I smile whenever I see it, and she must love it too because mother’s seem to collect moments as often as they can.

In my experience, most mothers want a thoughtful, creative, and handmade gift full of love. The only things mom’s love more than a unique gift is being a part of the creation process. All the young mother’s in my life love the family memories they photograph and keep in an album; miniature gardening is no exception to the rule. Many of my friends with young daughters and sons love the magic that is a part of fairy gardening. During the year, they have updated and changed their fairyscapes to express a holiday or seasonal theme. Miniature fairy gardening really is an exceptional way to reward your daughter or son for a job well done as well as a fun-tivity to do with your family.
