  • Decorative items like pebbles, fairies, mini containers, miniature accessories, structures, gnomes, branches and twigs can be used for styling up the miniature garden.

Remove the dead plants

  • Start pulling out the dead plants. Check for the growth of wild plants and the ones which that have to be pulled out.
  • Dead branches and foliage have to be trimmed off thoroughly.
  • The spent buds/ blossoms if present along with the new buds have to be cut down.

Churn up the top layer of soil and prune the dead branches

  • The top layer of the soil has to be churned up by using a garden fork before layering it with new soil.
  • Organic matter and nutrients leaches out of containers much faster than they do in the ground. Hence every planting season the potting mix has to be replenished with potting soil comprising compost or manure and fillers to aid drainage.
  • Dead branches in the shrubs and trees have to be pruned up for making a way for them to grow.

Amend the soil

  • Amend the soil to improve its texture. This plays a vital role in miniature gardening.
  • Organic potting soil that does not contain any fertilizer or any polymers should be considered because fresh potting soil contains enough nutrients for efficient growth of the plant and keeps them healthy for a couple of years.
  • Plants like conifers require a bit of air around their roots. Hence, effective drainage materials like perlite or vermiculite have to be added to the potting soil in case of their absence.
  • Consistent temperature and moisture content levels can be maintained by adding layers of mulch, which prevents weed growth.
