Top 5 Lucky Fairy Garden Finds

The gardening life is not all sunshine and rainbows. No matter how many years you have been gardening

The gardening life is not all sunshine and rainbows. No matter how many years you have been gardening, you are bound to experience stubborn droughts, rainy days, potting soil spills, pesky pests, and other incidents that are just frustrating enough to ruin an otherwise pleasant day. On the other hand, some days are a gardener’s dream. St. Patrick’s Day has me thinking of all the rainbows, healthy fairy garden plants, smiling faces, and other moments that make even the worst days in the miniature garden worth it. Keep reading to check out five gardening finds that feel like discovering a huge cauldron brimming with sparkly gold coins.

1) Marvelous Miniature Plants

Be honest: Do you have a favorite miniature plant? When it comes to my fairy gardens, there are miniature plants that fill out my containers and beds, adding reliable color and life to the garden…and then there are those extra-special plants! Those might include:

Rare or collectible varieties

Extremely easy-to-care-for or impossible-to-kill miniature plants

Miniature plants gifted by good friends

The plant that I struggled to grow at first, but finally mastered

These fairy garden plants are the lucky gold coins in my garden. Their presence makes me smile, and I love to point them out to visitors. What is your “gold coin” plant? If you do not have one yet, might I suggest a Money Plant? The round leaves resemble coins, and they are said to attract wealth to a gardener’s life. I sure hope the rumor is true!

2) Familiar Fairies

When it comes to garden fairies, it is always difficult to choose a favorite. Each of my garden residents is special in his or her own way. But there are those few fairies that hold a special place in my heart because they remind me of my real-life friends and family. It is always a lucky treat to discover a fairy that has my brother’s blonde hair, my niece’s sweet smile, or my mom’s warm countenance. It is rare to find fairies that remind us of our loved ones, but it is such a sweet bit of luck, especially if that person is no longer in our day-to-day lives.

If you are not able to find a fairy or other miniature garden resident who resembles your friends and family members, you might think instead about particular hobbies, occupations, and passions. A fairy with her nose in a book reminds me of my childhood best friend, while an elephant figurine stands for my sister, who loves elephants. These familiar fairy moments can help transform the miniature garden from everyday fairyhood to meaningful place to store memories, hopes, wishes, and stories.

3) Unique Fairy Houses

Whenever I am browsing for new fairy houses and other miniature accessories, I see endless possibilities. Fairy houses come in so many different sizes and styles! But sometimes, after hours of browsing and imagining the adventures my fairies could have, I am lucky enough to land upon an abode that is the ideal match for my miniature plants and fairies. Maybe it contrasts beautifully with the deep red leaves of my current favorite fairy garden plant, or it fits the theme I have been working on. Better yet, it lights up, so I can display it at night! That lucky moment of “Yes! This is the one!” is the feeling I chase.

4) The Perfect Container

Similar to the long-lost “perfect” fairy house, the ideal container can be hard to find, but oh-so sweet to discover. After hours, days, or weeks of searching, it feels amazing to finally fill up that container with soil and miniature plants. Maybe it is a pretty hanging basket, a galvanized plate, or a brightly-colored pot. Or maybe it is an antique washtub! Almost anything can become a fairy garden container if you squint at it for long enough.

5) Garden Friends

Fairy houses, miniature plants, miniature accessories, containers, and fairies are all wonderful…but nothing in the world makes me feel luckier than the smiling face of a friend. The friends I have made in the miniature garden and fairy garden world are some of the best! I look forward to growing even more friendships with gardeners, online and in real life, in the months and years to come.
