Every Famous Meal has its Dining Room Table

Its famous for a host of reasons, not least Meg Ryan’s spectacular (and hair-raising) performance, much to the consternation and amusement

Perhaps you haven’t noticed, but dining room tables have taken part in some of the most famous scenes in movie history. Their presence is often overshadowed by the actors, storyline, script… well, pretty much everything else in the shot, but they have a vital role to play.

In this article, we’ll take a look at some of the most famous scenes in film history, and the dining room tables that played an integral part.

When Harry Met Sally, 1989; Lunch

It’s famous for a host of reasons, not least Meg Ryan’s spectacular (and hair-raising) performance, much to the consternation and amusement of fellow diners. Take a closer look at this famous scene and you’ll notice a pretty bog standard looking dining room table, pretty typical of American diner booths. It may be overlooked by most cinema-goers, but this unassuming little table has a crucial role in the scene.

The Godfather, 1972; Tea

Michael Corleone may be visiting the little Brooklyn restaurant for tea, but food is the last thing on his mind as he sits down at the dining room table opposite a soon-to-be-dead police chief. We all know what happens next: the train noise rises and falls, the police chief takes a bullet and the table ends up on its side in a pool of blood.

The Lady and the Tramp, 1955; Tea

A little cheerier than our last choice, the meal in the Lady and the Tramp is one of cinema’s classic love scenes. The two dogs’ eyes meet over a pile of steaming pasta and a classic, American Italian restaurant dining room table and their lives are changed for good.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, 1984; Tea

We’ve all cringed through the meal scene in Temple of Doom as the locals feast on live baby snakes, sheep’s eyeball soup and monkey brains, but how many of us have taken note of the truly spectacular dining room table where the action is played out?
