Natural Drain Clearer: Baking Soda, Vinegar and more!

There are a lot of ways to get an obstruction out of a drain, and throughout this article we are going to describe some natural ways to do it.

Baking Soda & Vinegar:

This is the most well known and the most commonly used mix to unclog sinks throughout the world.

First off, you dump a bit of baking soda in the clogged drain, following it up with a substantial amount of vinegar. Careful while doing this, because if the clogging occurs too close to the drain there's the chance that it will all come out in a "jet" burst of white foam, so take this into consideration when trying to unclog using this natural drain cleaner.

Boiling Water:

This one is simple, but if the clog isn't too serious and you're just facing a temporary obstruction,  it can work wonders.

Simply prepare a pot of boiling water and dump it through the drain – but use common sense, not all of the pipes are prepared to handle boiling water, so see what they are made of first. Some, old, pipes are made with, low quality, rubber and those may be good candidates for other, less aggressive, compounds or tactics.

Coca-Cola or Fresh Soda:

You certainly watched a lot of Youtube videos about how corrosive Coca-Cola can be. Maybe you saw that one with the piece of meat dipped in Coke for a few days, or the one where they expose a tooth to Coke for a long period of time.

If you didn't see them, then know Coca-Cola and other sodas can quickly eat things away.

When we advise you to use fresh soda, we don't mean the temperature, we mean that it must be new Soda that still has all of the gas in it – it offers an extra boost and it can end a clog when other methods fail.

Citric Acid and a Plug:

This one is the least aggressive of them all, but it can clear minor obstructions. Be sure to prepare a healthy dose of citric acid for this experiment, you can find this acid in lemons, oranges, kiwis and other citric fruits.

You'll need a plug because you'll be dumping a substantial dose of this compound in the drain and it can bubble up and come rising out of it – cover it with a plug and let it act for some time.

After some time has passed, pull out the plug and see if it is fixed – if not, jump to another method; any of the ones described above.

So, the next time you get a clogged drain, try these natural compounds and see if they work out for you, if they don't, you may want to opt for more reliable tactics.
