It’s almost the end of the week, but we have some really exciting science and technology news today. Let’s start with today’s digest.

Bionic Eye Implant Returns Sight to the Blind

A lot of innovation has been happening in the healthcare industry, with companies coming up with concepts that could change the medical industry forever. A bionic eye implant called Argus® II Retinal Prosthesis System developed by Second Sight, has worked wonders for a blind man suffering from a genetic condition called retinitis pigmentosa.

“A miniature video camera housed in the patient's glasses captures a scene. The video is sent to a small patient-worn computer where it is processed and transformed into instructions that are sent back to the glasses via a cable. These instructions are transmitted wirelessly to an antenna in the retinal implant,” according to the company’s website.

“These pulses [of electricity] bypass the damaged photoreceptors and stimulate the retina's remaining cells, which transmit the visual information along the optic nerve to the brain, creating the perception of patterns of light. Patients learn to interpret these visual patterns with their retinal implant.”

Engineers Transmit Wireless Data at 6Gbps

After the likes of technologies like LiFi being 100x faster than WiFi – there a high probability WiFi will be a thing of the past in the future. Now, German engineers have achieved a record speed of 6 GBPS over a distance of 37km.

“Transmitting the contents of a conventional DVD in under ten seconds by radio transmission is incredibly fast – and a new world record in wireless data transmission. With a data rate of 6 Gigabit per second over a distance of 37 kilometers, a collaborative project with the participation of researchers from the University of Stuttgart and the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF exceeded the state of the art by a factor of 10,” the press release states.

The team believes the transmission of huge amounts of data through radio has a number of applications including transmitting data from satellites, providing high-speed internet to rural areas, optical fibers, and other communication systems.

Fred the Tortoise Receives 3D Printed Shell

After getting saved from a forest fire in Brazil and losing more than 85% of its shell, a tortoise named Fred has received a 3D-printed shell by an animal volunteer group called Animal Avengers. The group consists of 4 veterinarians, a designer and a dental surgeon. This shows that anyone with 3D printing technology can use it to make the world a better place.

Companies like Second Sight are pioneers of a movement to develop quality applications for the healthcare industry. Q3 Technologies is a large diversified technology company offering technology consulting and outsourced software application development services to the global IT industry.
