Everybody has the right to be extra apprehensive about the things surrounding us, at least for our own good. More than ever, we have the right to stay cautious and investigative matters concerning our health – most especially our dental health.

Now, I don’t intend to ruin that bond you have shared for quite some time with your dentist. However, a few dentists do not have sanitary working ethics that is totally disadvantageous for some people. Now, let me ask you this. How sanitary is the dental clinic you often visit? Okay. Wait. Don’t get too paranoid just yet! Cross infection happens very rarely, but you never know, right? It’s always better to stay guarded at all times. Now here are some questions you might want to ask your dentist on your next visit.

How do you disinfect your dental clinic? How do you sterilize the dental apparatus?

First and foremost, an orderly dental clinic is a reflection of those working in it. But don’t be too complacent about what you see. Ask if your dentist if he or she uses different gloves for every patient. Ask about how they disinfect the instruments, the chairs, and where they do it. It also pays to be very observant. That is where curiosity is formed.

Do you have an autoclave validation?

Every dental clinic is required to pass an autoclave test, also known as biological monitoring. This test aims to analyze how good or how poor a dental sterilization machine works. If your dentist has a license on hand, take a look at it for your own assurance.

How do I get a guarantee that you do not cross infect patients?

Well, this is one is the most direct. Just plainly say it – loud and proud.

You may find some of the questions a little too straightforward, and you worry about maybe upsetting or offending your dentist. But come on! He or she will not take it negatively if he or she isn’t hiding something from you. It’s actually better if you present him your queries at a time he or she least expects it. If your dentist is caught off guard and suddenly becomes too defensive, then you can start panicking! Kidding aside, if your dentist can fully explain to you everything, and somehow he or she can make you feel at ease, then you are in good hands.

So, the next time you go to dental clinic, you know what to do. Always ask. A lot of people have been saved from all sorts of harm or danger because they never hesitate to ask. Get over with the paranoia and make all things clear.
