Confused Between Aligners Or Braces For Your Child?

Has your child recently been told they require orthodontic treatment? Well, you’ve come to the right place.

I know as a parent, that you’re probably feeling a little unsure whether aligners or braces are the best choices for your child. So… what is the difference between these two options?

Simply put, braces consist of metal or ceramic brackets that are glued to the front of each tooth and connected by a wire. The wire applies a steady force to the teeth causing them to shift in position. Aligners consist of clear plastic trays which exert force on the teeth. Every 2 weeks, the patient is required to replace their tray until their teeth have fully shifted.

If you are debating between aligners or braces for your child, it is important to consider their differences. Both of these orthodontic options will provide your child with a unique experience. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each option down below.

What are The Advantages of Braces?

  • Permanent: One primary benefit of braces, is that they are glued to the teeth and can't be removed. Clear aligners, on the other hand, are removable. While this is a pro for some patients, it can also lead to improper use. In some cases, patients begin taking their aligners out too often or don’t wear them enough.
  • Customizable: Braces are customizable. Patients can change their bands every 4 to 6 weeks. Children and teenagers love this because they can choose from a range of color options. This is a fun way to get into the holiday spirit or to match their outfits or compliment their style. An added bonus here is that your child can also choose more neutral band colors if they don’t want to draw any attention to their appearance. The choice is theirs!
  • Effective: Braces can address a wide variety of dental issues, ranging from minor to severe. Even complex tooth issues and malocclusions can be corrected with braces. Braces often work faster at closing gaps and realigning the teeth. Clear aligners are more limited in terms of treating serious dental issues. What are The Disadvantages of Braces?

  • Oral Hygiene: Braces can’t be removed, which can make brushing and flossing trickier than before. Your child must ensure they are cleaning their teeth properly, especially in those hard to reach areas (under the wire and around the brackets). Their oral hygiene routine will require some modifications and they will need to adopt new cleaning techniques to avoid cavities and other oral issues.
  • Visibility: Braces are a less aesthetically pleasing option. They are visible and if your child doesn’t want anyone to notice them, aligners may be a better choice. With that said, ceramic braces are less noticeable than traditional braces, but only to an extent.
  • Dietary Restrictions: This is one of the biggest disadvantages for children. Certain foods such as popcorn, corn on the cob and sticky or chewy candies can damage braces. These foods are off limits for patients hoping to avoid the need for bracket replacement.

What are The Advantages of Clear Aligners?

  • Invisible: The primary advantage of aligners is that they are clear. They are virtually invisible which means others won’t even notice them. Many children and teenagers enjoy this feature because it makes them feel less self-conscious and more comfortable.
  • Removable: This is another reason why patients choose this treatment method over braces. Aligners are removed each-time a patient eats, drinks, brushes or flosses. This means your child’s oral hygiene routine will remain the same and it won’t require any extra effort to keep their teeth clean.
  • No Food Restrictions: Since the aligners are removable, your child won’t have to say goodbye to their favorite foods. With clear aligners, there is no need to follow dietary instructions in fear that the appliance will become damaged.

What are The Disadvantages of Clear Aligners?

  • Delayed Treatment: Clear aligners must be worn for a minimum of 22 hours a day. They should only be removed when the patient is eating or cleaning their teeth. If your child fails to follow these instructions, it can inhibit their progress which will result in longer treatment time.
  • Effectiveness: Clear aligners can’t correct complex dental issues. Clear aligners do not have the same force and abilities to shift teeth as braces do. Note, not everyone will qualify as a candidate for clear aligners.

Aligners or Braces?

Ultimately the choice is up to you. Whether you choose aligners or braces, both can provide your child with a beautiful smile. Be sure to factor in your child’s age and the amount of responsibility they are capable of handling. Your dentist in Orlando will be happy to help you find the right treatment option for your child.
