You have seen a very awesome movie and you want your own copy. However, you see that the movie is available in DVD and Blu-ray. What is the difference between a DVD and a Blu-ray disc? Basically, they are not the same so that is why you might want to know the main differences between them before you choose one.

•    Cost - One of the most obvious differences between a Blu-ray and a DVD disc is the cost.  Blu-ray discs are two times more expensive than the normal DVD disc. However, it seems that recession really took a huge toll on disc sales and that is why experts think that Blu-ray discs will be a lot cheaper in the future. Nevertheless, it is the price that makes Blu-ray discs very unpopular as of now.

•    Storage - DVDs that have single layers can store 4.7 gigabytes of data. Obviously, dual layer discs can store 8.7 gigabytes. Dual layer DVDs can store movies that run for about four hours. A Blu-ray disc can really store more than what a single layer DVD could. It can store up to 25 gigabytes of data. 25 gigabytes is enough for one whole season of a TV show. Two layer Blu-ray discs can store up to 50 gigabytes of data. Movie trilogies could be stored in a single double layer Blu-ray disc.

•    Resolution - Blu-ray discs are known to exhibit better image resolution than DVD discs. Blu-ray discs can exhibit 1080 pixels high definition resolution. If a standard tube television is used to play a Blu-ray disc, all pixels on the screen will be used and viewers will definitely have a good time watching the movie. If you really love a movie and you want to view it in high resolution, you should definitely get a Blu-ray version of it. An ordinary DVD disc can also store high resolution videos, but you will not be able to store a full-length high resolution movie in it.

•    Compatibility - One of the sad things about purchasing Blu-ray discs is that it could not be played on a regular DVD player. Blu-ray discs could not also be played on most laptops. Laptops have to be equipped with Blu-ray readers before you could play Blu-ray discs in them. However, you can play ordinary DVD discs in Blu-ray players. However, you should take note that the price of Blu-ray players is very high and they cost two times or even three times higher than a regular DVD player.

These are the main differences between a DVD and a Blu-ray disc. If you really love the movie and you want the best copy of it, it is very recommendable for you to get a Blu-ray version of it. However, if you do not really like the movie much or if you do not have enough cash, a DVD version should be purchased. You should not be worried about the quality of DVD discs since you could still enjoy them even if they are not as good as Blu-ray discs.
