Ways To Improve Your Creative Writing

No matter how accomplished you may be as writer,  improving your composition skills is a skill that always leaves plenty of room for improvement. Even the most accomplished writers recognise that.

Know your subject matter

Whatever you are writing, and it might be a novel with characters that came from your experiences and imagination, know your subject. Character development is one of the fiction novelists greatest assets. Some writers will write a synopsis of each character; what they look like, how they walk and comb their hair, what are their interests and hobbies? It’s all in the interest of being across their subject matter.

Surprise even yourself

Great writers have a process but even they are surprised by what happens when they sit at their computers. Allow yourself to be open to new things happening. The main rule of great creative writing is to entertain and compel. If that means doing something a bit out of the box then you should do it.

Look to create three acts

And each should have a setup, conflict and a resolution. Set up is the role and purpose of the characters.

As a bridge between the setup and the conflict there should be an inciting incident. The inciting incident should be the catalyst for a resolution from the conflict. The resolution is exactly that, a resolution but there should be some climactic within the resolution.

Detail

Write as much detail as you can into your work and trust the editing process to eliminate what is surplus to the story. Transform the readers into the world that you are trying to create. What do you see, hear, feel or smell? Sometimes the smallest details are the most important. Your readers will be there with you. Use metaphors to describe something. Metaphors can make something slightly complex easily relatable.
