Home security is high on most people's lists, but often home owners are unaware of the various security options available to them. When you consider that potential thieves will generally focus on properties that appear empty for periods of time, or that have little in the way of security, or seem easily accessible, then it's important to see why security measures should be in place to diminish the appearance of accessibility. Read on for 5 security measures you can implement that will help make your home less appealing to potential burglars.

1: Improve locks and doors

Take time to assess the quality of your locks and doors. Would you be able to easily break in if you needed to? If the answer is yes, then you need to amend that. All of your doors and windows should be resistant to easy access. If the strength of your doors are poor, consider having sturdier doors fitted. If your windows can be easily broken into, then consider window grills or security shutters, such as window roller shutters. Fit window locks to your windows and deadlocks to your doors, and install a chain lock and peep-hole in order to see who is at your door prior to opening it.

2:Install an alarm system

A security alarm is not only useful if someone succeeds in breaking into your home, but is also useful as a visual deterrent, preventing them from wishing to attempt to break into your home.  A burglar alarm is one of the first things a burglar will scout for, and as soon as one is spotted they will normally move onto an easier target. A home without any kind of alarm system is much easier to access undetected, so don't make it easy for potential thieves, install a security system. A security alarm may also reduce your home insurance costs too, so they are certainly a worthwhile investment on a number of levels.

3:Install security lighting

Make it harder for intruders by giving them little undetected access. Dark areas shield burglars, making it easier for them to break into your home. Installing security lighting such as outdoor flood lights and motion detector lights will help keep your home free from unwanted visitors.

4:Keep valuables hidden

As mentioned, most burglars will avoid homes which have many security measures in place. However, if the contents of your property seem worth the extra effort, be assured that a skilled burglar may make an attempt to break in. Never advertise the contents of your home via an unshielded window. Use netting, reflective window film, or window roller shutters, to screen the contents inside. Window shutters are a costlier option, but there many online companies that offer half price shutters, making them more affordable. Never openly display expensive items such as top-of-the-range televisions and other electronic devices, or jewellery and other expensive personal items.

5:Install a security camera

Lastly, if you have a real concern about being targeted, or just wish to be extra cautious, then consider installing a security camera. Have it installed in an area of your property where it cannot be easily damaged or covered up, and make sure that the camera is placed near a flood lit area, or near where a motion detector light is installed, so that the camera can pick up whoever has triggered the light.
