Are You Tired of Your Car's Tired Interior?

Imagine the scene - you have a lovely car, but the interior lets it down. The paintwork is dazzling and the wheels are a brilliant chrome. And when you lift the bonnet, you are almost blinded by the shining engine bay. The problem begins when you open the doors and look inside.

Imagine the scene - you have a lovely car, but the interior lets it down. The paintwork is dazzling and the wheels are a brilliant chrome. And when you lift the bonnet, you are almost blinded by the shining engine bay. The problem begins when you open the doors and look inside.  To be frank, it's a disaster area! The once proud leather seats are now torn and scuffed beyond recognition. The door cards are nearly hanging off and you can see the springs trying to escape from the cushions in the back. You have tried to hide this secret by buying cheap seat covers – a mistake. They did not stay in place and they made the interior look even worse. Even selling the car would be a herculean task; after all, who would want to sit inside this dreadful cabin? Fear not, there is a possible solution that will restore your love affair with your old car. To put it simply, you will need to remove these eyesores and install a fresher interior.

Locate the Donor Vehicle

There are two ways to obtain decent replacement seats without breaking the bank. The first way is to visit all of the car breaker yards in your locality. Track down the identical model, hopefully it is not too rare, and find the one with the best interior. Ensure you are happy with the condition and the color scheme.

An Easier Way

You could also look at the car adverts in the papers and online; you are looking for a complete car interior that has already been removed. This will save you quite a few hours, but it will more expensive.

Remove the Seats

You will need a basic toolkit to hand; this should include some adjustable spanners and a decent set of pliers.  First you will need to remove the bolts; they can be located at the ends of the seat rail. They may or may not have plastic covers; if so, these should be removed before undoing the bolts. Check for electrical connectors, remove this carefully and lift the seat out of the car.

Back Seats

This is an easier job when compared to the trickier front seats. They are usually in two sections: the seat cushion and the backrest. Remove the rear seat cushion by locating the attachments; you can find these around the perimeter of the cushion. Simply unhinge them and pull the free cushion out of the car. The rear backrest is even easier to remove. Most vehicles will have a visible pull handle; simply pull this and your backrest will be removed.

Door Cards

Both sets of doors will have door cards and these will usually match the seat trim. To remove the panels you need to locate the connectors and remove them carefully. Take extra care with the electrical connectors on these.

Fitting the Seats

As long as you have kept the original bolts from the removal, you should have no problems refitting the seats. Simply reverse the removal technique and take care with all stages of this activity. Pay special attention to the door cards; there is nothing worse than the excessive road noise that you may suffer otherwise.

Old Seats

Dispose of these at the local car breakers, then go out and enjoy your 'as new' interior!
