Highly Impressed: Do These First If This Is Your First Gig

It's easy to feel uneasy when it's the first time you are performing for your first gig, but you'll be okay with this.

For musicians, first gig is the most important part of their music journey. It sort of determines their next gig or if there is another one. After all, we all know how first impression works, right? However, that has often become a problem, since, well you know how first gig can be sometimes – yes, it can be stressful too. Let me be honest with you though, I used to be a choir president when I was a university student, and our choir club had a separate band that we would like to call “branch group” and when we got a first gig in Melbourne, Australia, I panicked. I was so nervous I didn’t think about finding live music venues in Melbourne for our little extra performance because that was my first time performing in front of foreigners. That being said, the performance went well and I learned a lot from that experience and let me share that with you in case you need this if you are a new musician. Keep reading to learn more!

First, practice makes perfect

I know it is tiring sometimes to practice a lot, but did you know that even K-pop idols spent time training up to 20 hours almost every day? Well, your practice doesn’t have to be like that, but you have to be consistent and diligent especially if you are going to perform in the near future. When you get used to practising, the stress and the nervousness will get better and you will master your stage.

Ask for feedbacks

Performing doesn’t always have to be big and on stage with hundreds of people paying you. You can perform in front of your sister in the living room next to your dog and ask for feedbacks from her. You can ask for opinions from your family and your friends by performing in front of them. Ask them what you need to improve and what you should add in order to improve based on their perspective as an audience.

Get your social media game on

Social media has now become the new ‘news’ for everybody nowadays. While live music is a way to make music fans know about you, social media is a way to make them want to know more about you. Social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter are the best places to showcase your band and tell people that you are performing soon and where it will be. This can not only gain you more audience but it can also build your relationship with them.

Be ready

One of the obvious points is; get ready and be ready. It just doesn’t make sense if your audience is waiting for you while you are not ready to give them what they want. Before you book your first show, make sure you are prepared to do the job. A common rookie musician mistake is booking a gig without having enough songs to fill a set or without the band members needed to pull off a live show.

It is not easy to not feel nervous when it is your first time performing for your first gig. However, you cannot ignore it; you have to get used to it. Be professional if you want to succeed in your music career. When you can nail your first gig, you will certainly nail your next gigs.
