Simple Ways You Can Improve Your Stage Performance

No matter how professional you are, you still have to improve to be better on the stage. This is how you do it.

Starting a music career whether it is for leisure time or purely a career path may not be easy. Sometimes you’ve got gigs coming up but you find it difficult to manage time. Sometimes, you are well-prepared for anything, but no gigs coming up to your agenda. Life is funny like that. That being said, you can either prepare, or wait for opportunities to come without being prepared. Either way, I would suggest that you still prepare. I’m going to give you a real life example. My friend was once a band member and at that time he told me how difficult it was to get a good gig, so he made a strategy where he held a quite big social party to showcase his band’s talent and skills. He even went all out to hire music venue in Melbourne for that said party. Originally, his plan was to get as much buzz as he could and perform as well as provide the best music experience for the audience. For that, he and the band practised a lot and prepared for everything to give their best. The party was a success and the band has been invited a lot for special occasions. He told me, “It seems so easy, but trust me, it was a hard work finally paying off. The thing is; you need to change your focus into improving the stage.” So I asked him how and he gave me these simple ways to improve the stage – maybe you can learn from him too. Tune your guitar, like the star you are

The best mistake you could ever make (even if you are a newbie) is tuning your guitar on your stage. People have already been waiting even before the show starts and you are going to make them wait again? Give them a break! A professional star checks their guitar at the backstage and when they show up on the stage, the music starts. Keep this in mind even though you are a newbie in the stage world. Think like a star and be the star you are, professionally.

Practice makes perfect

You might think you sound okay and nice to perform, but other factors might hinder you to perform well on your show. Practise your voice and find if there is anything missing in your voice. Also, check on your music equipment. You may not know if there is something wrong with your band equipment that can ruin your band performance later. Check and practice – that’s the key, and make sure you do it all the time even until minutes before your show starts.

Invite your most honest friends and ask for honest opinions

I’m not saying you shouldn’t invite your parents just because they might tell you you’re doing great even though you know you are not. Still, you should also invite your most honest friends to your show and ask them for honest opinions. Use your family’s good opinions as your pep talk – the one you need for your encouragement, but use your honest friends’ honest opinions as your guide to practising and improving your skills for the next gig. Your honest friends will tell you what goes wrong with your performance and give you a few suggestions from audience’s perspective. This will give you insights on how to do better next time.

Oh, right, there is one more thing you should know; it is completely okay to make mistakes. We all are humans and humans make mistakes, like, a lot – but it’s normal. However, learn to be calm in every situation. You may make mistakes even on the stage, but keep it real and most importantly, keep it going! Your audience doesn’t need to know you are making a little mistake on the stage by not stopping halfway just because you notice your mistake. Your audience might not even notice, so keep going. Stopping when you are in the middle of singing your song just because a minor mistake will only make things worse – that’s why, be more professional even though you think you are still a newbie. Professional bands out there started from zero and they were once a newbie. What makes them who they are today is actually how they do things professionally for their show in their ‘amateur’ times. When you set your focus on being professional, you will improve your stage performance like the star you are.
